AMP is pleased to present DR FRANKENSTEIN, a solo show by American artist Hugo Markl including works from the BROWN series, sculptures from the LINK series, the sculpture ‘WINCHESTER?’, and the print-drawing ‘ACTING’.

The BROWN series consists of c-prints based on assembled magazine material which has been overpainted, then scanned and mounted on aluminium. The material in this series comes from images of printed media from art magazines and art catalogs and one underlying Vogue magazine, which the artist found in restaurants and planes. It is through the digital re-working of the collages, transferred on a single picture surface that a final artwork is produced.

Markl has named the BROWN works series alphabetically after the United States. This geographical classification chosen for the artworks creates a sort of basic line for his concept. The indexing of references – in the BROWN series – contextualized contemoporary, postmodern and modern artworks (Gordon Matta Clark, Dan Graham, Paul McCarthy, Egon Schiele, Claude Monet for instance); and public figures of the contemporary entertainment industry.

DR FRANKENSTEIN also includes four LINK sculptures of medium format. Each link is a unique piece manufactured out of aluminium and corresponds to existing links of actual pornographic webpages. Hugo Markl describes this choice with a metaphor: “I’ve copied folk art that won’t become folk art”.

Hugo Markl was born in Pasadena. He lives and works in New York.
